This paper is an analysis of how the structure affects the meaning in Ruth Porritt's poem "Read This Poem From The Bottom Up." When read as the title suggests, the poem takes on one particular meaning, which suggests spiritual lightness of being. Read in the traditional manner, it pulls the reader downward, in "the gravity of habit." Through manipulating the structure of the language and the manner in which it is read, Porritt has essentially created two meanings for one poem.
