Chapter Synopsis of Sociology for the Twenty-First Century: Continuities and Cutting Edges In order to fit the context in which the modern sociologist functions, the goals of sociology must be altered accordingly. Abu-Lughod and the other essayists reviewed in this paper find that while some themes in traditional sociology remain accurate - such as the creation of a historical framework in order to critically assess aspects of the modern society – the exclusion of more contemporary factors creates a divisive gap between the accurate study of sociology and the comprehension of the existing sociological environment.
