This paper disucsses two published studies that make use of contrived actions to test hypotheses regarding learning and problem solving, asking how these kinds of actions can tell us anything about real-world situatons, and answering that they do so by using easily controlled sitautions to illustrate ideas and test alternatives and that we can then apply what we learn elsewhere.
