Mental Illness ABout Schizophrenia and Art

Introduction Schizophrenia is defined as a debilitating psychotic disorder in Bryant Furlow’s article on “The Radiologic Assessment of Schizophrenia.” (Furlow, 2000). Past research regarding the mental illness of schizophrenia has suggested that the mental illness is caused both by genetic and environmental factors, yet, more importantly, in terms of this paper, previous research findings indicates a disproportionate representation of schizophrenia in talented and creative families (Jureidini, 2003). Jureidini draws further interesting correlations between characteristics of great art and artists and the characteristic core symptoms and subtypes of schizophrenia. Furlow delineates such characteristics in his assessment of schizophrenia; common symptoms include bizarre delusions and hallucinations, whereas Uli Khran focuses on the phenomenon of “schizophrenic logic” (Khran, 2004). This particular characteristic of the mental illness refers to the “double, or even multiple (logic), permitting the truth of several contradictory sentences” (Khran, 2004).
