Anorexia and Labeling Theory Most of us understand that there is no such thing as normality – that each one of us is different in ways both small and often large from the average, from the norm. And yet many people long to consider themselves normal – and they often do so through the mechanism of defining other people as abnormal. The type of simplistic black-and-white thinking is very similar to and possibly the same as strolling down a certain primrose path, and yet we persist in it, in generally considering what we believe and what we do to be right and normal and what other people believe and what other people do to be wrong – or deviant. This is problematic enough when one is on the “normal” side of such a definition, but far more problematic when one is on the deviant side, as McLorg and Taub argue in their article “Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia: The Development of Deviant Identities”. This paper examines that article and looks at how labelling theory can help to explain the experiences of individuals who suffer from these eating disorders.
