This is a summary book review of Freud's Ego and the Id. It focuses on consciousness, personality development, dreams and hidden desires. It does not analyze the value of the work. The Ego and the Id is the last of Freud's theoretical works. It offers a description of the mind and its workings, which is at first sight new and revolutionary. All of the psychoanalytic writings after this date would bear its imprint if only in the terminology applied to describe the workings of the human psyche. While a great deal Freud's work has been discounted in the recent past, there is a still a common thread used as a basis for a fundamental understanding of the development of the human personality and consciousness.
