Passivity and Engagement in Popular Music. This paper will argue, with reference to a variety of cultural and music criticism, that popular music has been defined by a dynamic tension between populism and commercialism. As will be seen, while the cultural industry has a remarkable capacity to co-opt and shape subcultural products, subcultures also repeatedly challenge, parody and reinvent mainstream "patterned and pre-digested" products. 4 pgs.
