This seven-page undergraduate essay analyzes the position of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato regarding the concept of majority rule in democracies, examines how the concept of majority rule is used in modern political societies, and discusses whether Plato’s criticisms of majority rule make sense. The author clarifies many of the thoughts of Plato on democracy, and places them in their proper historical context in order to compare and contrast what Plato actually wrote with what many people mistakenly believe.
