Philosophy: whether it is a harm or a benefit to bring a person into existence This paper presents an overview of the positive and the negative aspects of bringing a child into the world. The paper argues that while a child is only given the opportunity to contribute to the welfare of the world through their being born, there is overwhelming practical evidence suggesting that the great number of human beings currently alive are not contributing anything of value, and that the infant has no security in terms of the conditions of their birth and welfare.
