Romantic Love in Browning, Rossetti and Arnold: Similarities and Differences

This paper briefly explores the treatment of romantic love in the poetry of Robert Browning, Christina Rossetti and Matthew Arnold. Without putting too fine a stress upon it, the paper argues that nineteenth century gender stereotypes and expectations negatively shaped the manner in which romantic love was treated in their respective works. The paper ultimately argues that romantic love is not presented in a healthy manner by any of the poets (though Rossettis shortcomings are perhaps more forgivable).
