Jude the Obscure. Part of Sue's aversion is, as we shall see shortly, rooted in her belief that marriage cripples the free spirit, so that even after both she and Jude have been freed by the divorces of their mates, she refuses to marry Jude. Earthbound as she is, she cannot afford the luxury of Jude's and Sue's observations about man and society, but she recognizes what is what. Christminster, with Jude dying as the crowd cheers, rounds out the bitter tale that began when a pizzle smacked into Jude's ear "at the supreme moment of his young dream." 5 pgs.
