Feminism and Morality: A Language Analysis of The Mill on the Floss By George Eliot
In this paper we have analyzed the themes of renunciation and morality in Maggie’s feministic attitudes toward celibacy and love with men. By understanding the aspects of language in Eliot’s writing on religious morality and concepts in symbolism, allusions and simile in this novel, there can be a stronger realization of the spiritual ‘laws’ in religious morality that Maggie is closely in tune with. This is how language is the basis for Eliot’s feminist perspectives in morality through Maggie’s perception of Christian ideals and issues surrounding the men in her environment in the novel "The Mill on the Floss".
