Comparing Versions of Hell in Dantes Inferno and Virgils Aeneid

This paper demonstrates that the visions of hell presented by both Dante and Virgil reflect the perceptions of their authors. DanteÂ’s Inferno displays a Christian theme, in which the evildoer condemns himself in life and is punished thereafter throughout eternity, while VirgilÂ’s Aeneid suggests a greater freedom for the soul in hell despite a general theme of punishment. Through comparing and contrasting the views of the authors in their respective works, this paper demonstrates that Dante and Virgil expressed the themes of their respective religions within their epic poems.
