This paper questions the validity of using heterosexual assumptions to study non-heteronormative cultures. It refers to writings by Gilber Herdt (Third Sex, Third Gender) and Saskia Wieringa (Female Desires) to show that in fact heterosexual assumptions are an outdated socially imposed restriction that cannot be used effectively in studying those who for so long have been considered 'different'.
