Boys DonÂ’t Cry (1999), opened the door for transgender activism. Although this door was seriously knocked at with the release of The Crying Game in 1992, Boys Do Not Cry focuses on a female-to-male (FTM) transgender identity, which has not seen light compared to the more well-known fare of male-to-female (MTF) transgender identity. Boys DonÂ’t Cry spurred activism after producer Kimberly Pierce made Brandon TeenaÂ’s hate crime known to the public. Brandon was raped and killed by two heterosexual men who wanted to teach him a lesson for posing male.
