Nationalism as a Force for the Demise of the Soviet System. This paper discusses the nationalism as a force for the demise of the Soviet System. Moscow, therefore, had to find a way of dealing with this problem. It succeeded in the short term, but never had the capacity to deal with it in the long term. It was the ethnic problem, therefore, and the Soviet regime's inability to deal with it, that contributed to the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991.
