This paper discusses the reading process. There are four steps to the reading process: decoding, literal comprehension, inferential comprehension, and comprehension monitoring. (Teacher/Parent) Decoding the words is the first step. Literal comprehension is putting the words together in phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. The inferential comprehension is the combination of the schemata and literal comprehension. Comprehension monitoring is thinking about what it means and putting it all There are several activities to use in the classroom to promote the reading process.
