The Effect of the Mad Cow Scare on the United States Balance of Trade as it Relates to the U.S. Beef Industry This paper examines the issue of balance of trade in the United States beef industry as it has changed after mad cow disease was first discovered in American cattle in December 2003. Previous to that discovery the beef industry in the United States was operating under a surplus balance of trade -- afterwards which changed as a number of nations banned the import of U.S. beef.
