Prison Substance Abuse Treatment Programs Effective or Not

It has been demonstrated time and time again, by study after study, that criminal offenders with substance abuse problems have an extremely high rate of recidivism. That is, if a criminal has a drug problem, he or she is likely to commit another crime and end up back in prison after being released. It would logically follow then that prison substance abuse treatment programs should reduce recidivism and this in turn would save taxpayers’ money because they will not have to fund further incarceration for particular prisoners. This paper explores the topic of whether or not prison substance abuse treatment programs are effective or not – for both society, as well as the drug addicts themselves.
