Decoding Advertisements and Pinning their Hidden Ideological Assumptions Within this paper, I examine two advertisements from a recent issue of Canadian Geographic. One of the ads focuses upon the masculine gender; the other is directed towards women. I demonstrate the ways in which each advertisement supports traditional patriarchal structures, while suggesting that the advertisement's they are not selling a product for its use value, but for the image that owning such a product embodies.
