Tracing the demographic expansion of Canada in the course of the 19th century by reflecting on the patterns of economic, political and social development of the same period. Canada was not settled at a smooth and gradual rate. Geographical diversity and overwhelming size ensured that the process was a sporadic and impetuous one.
