Remembrance of Things Past: Loons and Roses - A Comparison of the Theme of Nostalgia in Faulkners A Rose for Emily and Laurences The Loons
Nostalgia is “a sentimental yearning for a period of time past” (Barber). This yearning is frequently for lost hopes and dreams – a bitter sweet yearning for a dream that once was, and now is gone forever - never to be realized, and never to be dreamed again. William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” and Margaret Laurence’s “The Loons” both include this element, so that both stories have the effect of inducing a quiet sadness in the reader.
