This is a letter address the question of whether or not Canada should reinstate the death penalty for certain crimes. It discusses the individual’s opinion about capital punishment and why the writer feels this way. There are two ways to consider this decision, a most important decision, as it involves life and death. The utilitarian school of thought maintains that the consequences determine the moral worth of an action. By assigning value to innocent and murderous human life, and accepting the “best bet argument”, one may deduce that capital punishment is an effective deterrent. Yet the deontological view calls us to consider that optimal consequences, much less actual consequences have really, nothing to do with moral and ethical issues when the issue is contemplated more deeply.
