The Telecommunications Economics of the Mobile Internet The purpose of this paper is to comment on key aspects of the economics of telecommunications as it applies to the wide-spread adaption of internet-capable cell-phones in Japan. Besides documenting this trend with subcriber numbers ove time, the paper explores some of the social and psychological factors entailed. Flat versus metered usage rates are discussed as well as is the type of diffusion process that best describes trends in Japan.
