The Seated Head of Gudea This paper examines a statue in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, a statue of Gudea, ruler of the ancient city-state of Lagash in Sumeria, a work from the period after the fall of the Akkadian Empire, so that during the next fifty years, local kings ruled independent city-states in southern Mesopotamia, pone of which was the city-state of Lagash.
