Rousseau the Artist: An Analysis of His Productive Years This ten-page graduate paper examines the productive life of the French artist Henri Rousseau. The author notes that because Rousseau was self-taught and didnÂ’t start painting until heÂ’d passed the age of forty, he had to struggle to overcome the unkind condescension and criticism of many of his contemporaries. His strange, unorthodox style was often derided by other artists as well, yet he succeeded in converting many of his critics into admirers, mostly because of the compelling, dreamlike jungle paintings he produced during his most productive years.
