The Vietnam War, 1965 to 1973, was a war that the USA should have won – on paper. In terms of firepower, the USA should have won the war with ease. Similarly, in terms of manpower, the USA was very strong - by the year 1968 the USA had half a million American troops fighting alongside as many South Vietnamese soldiers. Yet the USA resoundingly lost the war. Like many events in history, this loss is attributable to a variety of complex factors.
