Ocean Hill-Brownsville Dispute The Ocean Hill-Brownsville dispute erupted when in May 1968 a number of teachers and educators were fired from their jobs. Except for one, all the dismissed educators (19 in total) were white whereas the local school board members that fired them were predominantly black. The incident of firing and the consequent disputes was rooted in the long history of race relations and the dilemma of right movements in the United States.
